LED is an acronym for “Light Emitting Diode”. You likely interact with LED technology in some way several times a day, including your phone, lamps and many other sources of lighting. LEDs are the small elements on a television screen that illuminate up to create a full screen image. Basically, when an electrical signal passes through these cells, they emit light and the television controls the electrical impulses to create the image it wants to show. QLED, OLED and Mini-LED are variations of this basic technology, which was used in electronic devices as early as the 1960s and became popular in TV technology thanks to refinement and eventual acquisition by Samsung in 2007. QLED is a technology from Samsung that builds on the typical LED-backlit LCD (Liquid Crystal Display) television.

OLED requires no backlight as each pixel is self-illuminating and can be turned on and off. It has the highest contrast ratios, crystal-clear image quality and true blacks, some of the technology’s key selling points.

Is Mini LED better than OLED?

Despite the improvement, OLED is still better than mini-LED. That’s not to say the Mini LED is bad. Mini-LED excels in certain areas where OLED doesn’t. A big advantage of a mini LED panel over an OLED is the brightness levels. Mini LED TVs can reach a maximum brightness of up to 2,000 nits. In comparison, current OLED panels rarely reach a maximum brightness of 900 nits. So for a good viewing experience, you’re better off choosing a mini LED TV instead of an OLED one if you plan on placing it in a well-lit room. OLED panels still have some disadvantages over LED-LCD panels, such as a decrease in luminance over time and the possibility of a “washed-out” image.
