How to Edit iPhone’s App Icons – Guide

If you use the same few apps every day, there’s a good chance your icons will get burned into your memory. This is great for building muscle memory, but not very visually appealing. Fortunately, the new versions of iOS and iPadOS include a feature which allows you to change almost any app icon to any image. You can even rename the apps, which is great if you have nicknames for your favorites. Apple’s iPhone is arguably one of the best smartphones out there, but owners may find it difficult to make their iPhone stand out in a sea of nearly identical home screens. However, thanks to iOS 14, Apple is allowing users to create custom app icons so they can finally call their iPhone their own. ..

Apple’s iOS 14 introduced a wide range of new features and functionality for your iPhone, from the library of apps to home screen widgets. It also introduced a feature that flew a little under the radar: the ability to change app icons on your iPhone. This is a simple tweak, but it’s not immediately clear How to do this, as Apple does not disclose the feature compared to other iOS 14 additions. It’s possible, with Apple’s built-in Shortcuts app. They won’t actually replace the icons the apps came with, but they will create separate shortcuts that lead to the app. It is a tedious and time-consuming process, but in final you can have a fully customized iPhone home screen.

How to Customize your iPhone app icons

If you’re new to the Mac, it’s a good idea to find an icon for your new shortcut. There are several sources of icons online (Flaticon, for example), or if you are creative and/or ambitious, you can create your own. If you use someone else’s image or your own, save the image to Photos.

The Shortcuts app is a pre-installed app on your home screen. If you can’t find it right away, swipe left until you reach the App Library and start typing “Shortcuts” in the top search bar.

To create a new shortcut, first open the app and tap the plus sign in the top right corner. Enter the name of your new shortcut at the top and tap “Add Action.” ..

There are many interesting things to try in Shortcuts, but now, what we want to do is change the app icons. Type “Open App” in the search bar and tap the “Open App” link.

Open the App List by tapping on the word “App” that appears (a little faintly) next to the word “Open”. You will see a list of your apps; choose what you want to customize.

To return to your shortcut page, tap on the blue symbol in the upper right corner. ..

Add to Home Screen

You will now see a preview of the icon that Shortcuts automatically adds. Don’t worry – we’ll make it better.

If you have not already saved a photo in Photo, you can tap the “Choose Photo” button and select the photo you want to use.

If you choose an existing photo, a highlighted area will indicate which part of the photo will appear as an icon; you can move the photo until you are satisfied with the indicated section. Tap “Choose” in the lower right corner.

Your new shortcut will now have a name.

Are you ready to add a new post? Tap the Add Post button in the top right corner. ..

You’ve now received your new custom icon in the mail. Congratulations! ..

If you see two new icons on your home screen, one with the first boring icon and one with its new wonderful icon, just press and hold the icon you don’t want and select “Delete bookmark.” Remember, this one (and the other one you created) is a bookmark/shortcut.

To hide the original app icon, you can either delete it or change its appearance. ..

Long press the original app icon and select “Edit Home Screen.” ..

Remove the app from your home screen.
