How to Turn off Windows 10 PC Updates via Registry Editor – Guide

Windows 10 cumulative updates are automatically downloaded and installed as they become available. Although this approach allows laptops and desktop computers to receive security updates to fix vulnerabilities, improve performance and provide enhancements without user interaction, it is a very controversial issue feature. It is usually because updates contain bugs that can negatively affect the experience in many ways. For example, they can break existing functionality, introduce driver and application compatibility issues, or cause the blue screen of death (BSoD) and require a system restart to complete the installation, which can interrupt your workflow.

Disable automatic updates on your computer by using the Settings app or the registry. If you have more problems than benefits with updates, or if you have a good reason to use a non-updated device, you can disable them permanently.

How to Disable automatic updates using Registry Editor

Open Registry Editor on your computer. To do this, open the start menu and search for the term ‘Regedit’. Now, in the search results, click Registry Editor to open the application.

C:\Windows\system32\config and change the value of the registry key named “HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion” to the following: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\6.1.7601.17514 This will enable Windows 7 to run on systems that have Windows XP or earlier installed.

Now, click on the WindowsUpdate folder. If it doesn’t exist, right click on the Windows folder and from the options select New and from the drop down menu click on the ‘Key’ option. Name the newly created key ‘WindowsUpdate’. If you don’t have a WindowsUpdate folder, you can create one by right clicking on your Windows folder and selecting New > Key. Name this key “WindowsUpdate” ..

To create a new key, right-click on the drive you want to encrypt and select the ‘New’ submenu. From here, you can choose to create a new key or open an existing key. ..

Name the new ket ‘AU’: Ket ‘AU’

After changing the value of the NoAutoUpdate key to ‘1’, you can double-click on it to enable automatic updates.
